The Baton Rouge-based duo was founded in 2020. The Vermillion Duet seeks to explore the clarinet and flute repertoire, especially focusing on works by underrepresented composers. Avid new music performers, the Vermillion Duo also aims to collaborate with contemporary composers to expand the repertoire of flute and clarinet music.

Flutist, Yuh-Jiun Melody Wan

Taiwanese-American flutist Yuh-Jiun (Melody) Wan is an avid soloist, chamber musician, and educator. As a dedicated educator, Melody is the Flute Lecturer at Southeastern Louisiana University. She previously served as the flute faculty at the Orchepia School of Music, the Learning Tree Academy, and was the Flute Teaching Assistant at Louisiana State University. She has won first place in the Taiwan Music Competition, the Louisiana Flute Society Solo Master Class Competition, and the Cadenza Competition at the CSU Summer Arts Festival. She also received top prizes at the California State University Long Beach Flute Competition. She has performed in concerts across Asia, North America, and Europe. Melody obtained the Performance Diploma Diplôme Supérieur d'Enseignement de Flûte Traversière from École Normale de Musique de Paris Alfred Cortot in France. She earned a Master of Music degree from the Bob Cole Conservatory at California State University, Long Beach, and a Bachelor of Music Degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Clarinetist, Janghyun Thomas Kim

Thomas is a Doctoral Musical Arts candidate and the graduate teaching assistant of the clarinet studio at Louisiana State University. Originally from South Korea, he made his solo debut at Sejong Center for The Performing Arts with The Chosun Ilbo (The Chosun Newspapers) in Korea. Thomas made his American solo debut at Carnegie Hall after winning second place at The American Protégé International Music Competition in 2018. As a composer, Thomas plans to create works that will expand the clarinet repertoire. His pieces were performed in Europe, Asia and North America. His first composition, Destin, a programmatic work for solo clarinet portraying his experience in Destin beach, was selected to be performed at Carnegie Hall in October 2020. He studies composition as his minor with Dr. Mara Gibson at LSU. Thomas received his Bachelor of Music in Clarinet performance from the Catholic University of Korea, and his Master of Music in Clarinet Performance from Southeastern Louisiana State University in U.S.A, where he held a Graduate Assistantship. His primary instructors include Deborah Chodacki, and Hyungak Shin.
